Resistance Soldering > Thermal Wirestripping Systems

Certain wire types release Fluorine gasses into the air upon reaching a gel state. This gas can be harmful and cause negative health effects if ingested. Always ensure proper ventilation when thermally stripping wire.
Model 10503 - Standard Capacity Resistance Wirestripping System

Description: This System consists of a Model 105A3 100 Watt Power Unit, a Model 10517, Regular Wirestripping Handpiece and a Model 10519 Footswitch.

Uses: Uses; This System can be used to cleanly strip 14 AWG and finer wires having low-temperature PVC, (PVC will require lower heat settings – just to soften, but not burn), up to and including high-temperature, fluorocarbon types of insulation. Because heat is being used to soften and part the insulating material, time required to strip will vary with the type and thickness of the jacket, as well as the conductor size. Any shielding under the jacket will slow the softening time, but most insulation will strip cleanly without fraying, given the appropriate amount of time. The proper stripping method is to heat, twist and pull gently to remove the insulation.

Replacement Electrodes/Elements:

  • Model 10545 metal elements (round cross section, 1 notched)(Pkg. of 2)
  • Model 10529 metal elements (both flattened, 1 notched)(Pkg. of 2)
  • Model 10520 metal elements (both flattened and notched)(Pkg. of 2)

Power Unit Description: The Model 105A3 Power Unit has a low-voltage, high amperage, variable output, isolated transformer. The output voltage is 0 - 2.65 VAC (with no load). The control knob reads 0 – 100% of output voltage. This Power Unit may be adapted to automated and fixtured production tooling. For more detailed information please read the Information/Instruction sheet included with the Power Unit in this Kit.

Handpiece Description: The Model 10517 Regular Tweezer, Wirestripping Handpiece is supplied with two, specially formed, resistance wire, nickel-chromium elements, to create heat for stripping insulation from wire, by softening and/or melting through the outer jacket of the wire to be striped. It has a four-foot (1.22 m), 14-2 HPN neoprene cable, with taper pin quick connect terminals for fast, easy connection to the 105A3 Power Unit (push in turning clockwise until snug) and padded handles for operator comfort. For more detailed information please read the Information/Instruction sheet included with the Handpiece in this Kit.

Footswitch Description: The Model 10519 Footswitch is a rugged, industrial switch, (wired normally open), with a six-foot (1.83 m) 18-3 SJT cord and NEMA 5-15 P/R piggyback style plug/receptacle. This footswitch is often used, to better control the cycle time needed for an application.

Model 10503P - Production Capacity Resistance Wirestripping System

Description: This System consists of a Model 105A3T (100 watt) Power Unit, a Model 10517, (Regular Tweezer) Wirestripping Handpiece and a Model 10519 Footswitch.

Uses: This System can be used to cleanly strip 14 AWG and finer wires having low-temperature PVC, (PVC will require lower heat settings – just to soften, but not burn), up to and including high-temperature, fluorocarbon types of insulation. With this system the Handpiece activates immediately upon removal from its cradle which is situated on the top of the Power Unit.

  • Model 10529 metal elements (both flattened, 1 notched)(Pkg. of 2)

Model 105SMD - Surface Mount Device Removal System (AKA Micro Resistance Wirestripping System)

Description: System Description: This set is designed to provide a convenient hand-held tool for thermally removing and replacing small surface mounted devices from circuit boards. The Micro-Tweezers Handpiece, incorporating two Elements, easily desolders and lifts the SMD. In many cases, the tool can also replace the device. For more detailed information please read the Information/Instruction sheets included with the Power Unit and Handpiece in this Kit. Powered by a low-voltage, high amperage, AC current, Power supply and controlled by a Footswitch, ease of use is assured on the smallest of components. Two types of Elements are supplied (wide and narrow/deep) to fit a choice of applications.

Uses: To use the system, proceed as follows:

  1. Connect the Power Supply through the Footswitch plug to a properly grounded 120 VAC outlet.
  2. Insert the taper pin connectors from the Handpiece into the Power Unit receptacles (push in turning clockwise until snug). The receptacles are interchangeable. Be sure to set the power dial to zero (“0”).
  3. Depress and hold down the Footswitch (the Power Unit pilot light will come on). Increase the dial setting until the Elements will just melt solder (about 20%). Leave the setting at this point. If necessary, raise it a little at a time but do not exceed a setting of 60% or the elements may be destroyed. If the pilot light does not come on or one or both Elements do not heat, check all connections and inspect for broken Elements.
  4. Release Footswitch and place Tweezers Elements over soldered ends of SMD to be desoldered. Use a light but firm grip on the SMD. Depress the Footswitch and lift as solder flows. Do not attempt to rush the job so as to damage the tool or the device and pad. Release the Footswitch as soon as the device is free.
